Safeguarding

Prevent. Protect. Partner. Practice.

At New Moston Primary School, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

We are committed to providing a safe, supportive and nurturing environment where every child is protected from harm, feels able to speak openly and receives the right help at the right time.

Safeguarding is not simply a set of procedures. It is part of our everyday culture and underpins the decisions we make, the relationships we build and the way we work with children and families.

Our approach reflects the principle that safeguarding must always be child-centred, with the welfare and best interests of the child at the heart of our work. This is consistent with the expectations set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026.

Our Safeguarding Approach

Safeguarding is embedded throughout school life.

We work proactively to identify concerns, respond quickly when children need support and ensure that pupils understand how to keep themselves and others safe.

This includes:

  • creating an environment where children feel safe, valued and listened to;
  • maintaining clear safeguarding and child protection procedures;
  • ensuring staff are trained to recognise and respond to signs of abuse, neglect, exploitation and vulnerability;
  • providing appropriate early help and support where concerns emerge;
  • working closely with parents, carers and external professionals;
  • teaching pupils how to stay safe, including online; and
  • maintaining a strong culture of vigilance and professional curiosity.

Our Four Safeguarding Pillars

Prevent

“We act early to reduce risk and prevent harm.”

We take a proactive approach to safeguarding.

Through education, strong relationships and early identification, we aim to recognise emerging concerns and provide support before difficulties escalate.

This includes:

  • teaching children how to keep themselves safe;
  • identifying vulnerabilities and emerging concerns;
  • providing timely pastoral and early help support;
  • promoting safe use of technology and the online world; and
  • creating an environment where children feel able to speak to trusted adults.

Protect

“We maintain strong systems that keep children safe.”

We ensure robust safeguarding arrangements are in place across the school.

This includes:

  • clear reporting and referral procedures;
  • effective safeguarding record-keeping;
  • appropriate safer recruitment checks;
  • regular staff training and updates;
  • secure arrangements for visitors and volunteers; and
  • prompt action when a safeguarding concern is identified.

Partner

“Keeping children safe is a shared responsibility.”

Schools are part of a wider safeguarding system.

We work closely with parents, carers, governors and relevant professionals, including children’s social care, health services and the police, to ensure children receive the right support at the right time.

Effective information sharing and partnership working are essential where there are concerns about a child’s welfare.

Practice

“Safeguarding is part of everyday practice.”

We promote a culture in which all adults understand their safeguarding responsibilities and remain alert to changes in children’s behaviour, presentation or circumstances.

Safeguarding practice is regularly reviewed and strengthened through:

  • training and professional development;
  • safeguarding supervision and discussion;
  • monitoring and quality assurance;
  • review of safeguarding systems and records; and
  • learning from local and national safeguarding practice.

Our safeguarding team is led by the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), who has overall responsibility for safeguarding and child protection across the school.

Training and Safeguarding Culture

All staff receive appropriate safeguarding and child protection training and regular updates.

Staff are expected to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and to act immediately where they have a concern about a child.

Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026 requires all staff to read Part One in full and follow their school’s safeguarding policies and procedures.

We encourage an open safeguarding culture where concerns can be raised without delay and where staff understand that safeguarding concerns can arise in any school or community.

Safer Recruitment

New Moston Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

We follow safer recruitment procedures and undertake the appropriate pre-employment checks for roles within the school.
