Medical & Care

At New Moston Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that children with medical conditions and additional health or care needs are supported safely, sensitively and consistently.

We recognise that every child’s needs are different. Some children may require ongoing support for a long-term medical condition, while others may need temporary arrangements following an illness, injury, medical procedure or change in circumstances.

Where additional support is required, we work closely with parents and carers, the child and, where appropriate, relevant healthcare professionals to ensure that suitable arrangements are in place.

Individual Health Care Plans

Some children with ongoing or more complex medical needs may require an Individual Health Care Plan.

This sets out the child’s medical needs, the support required in school, any medication or emergency procedures, and the responsibilities of those involved in their care.

Plans are developed in partnership with parents and carers and reviewed whenever a child’s needs change or at an appropriate review point.

Short-Term Health Care

Children may occasionally require temporary support following an injury, illness, operation or medical procedure.

Where appropriate, a Short-Term Health Care Plan may be put in place to record any temporary adjustments, restrictions or support required so that the child can attend school safely.

Intimate Care

Some children may require support with intimate or personal care during the school day.

Where this is required, arrangements are agreed sensitively with parents and carers and are designed to protect the child’s dignity, privacy, safety and independence.

Individual arrangements will be put in place where necessary and reviewed as the child’s needs develop.

Allergy & Asthma Care

Children with allergies, anaphylaxis or asthma may require specific arrangements to manage their condition safely in school.

Where necessary, an individual care plan will be agreed with parents and carers, including information about triggers, medication, emergency procedures and any reasonable adjustments required.

More detailed information about allergy arrangements can be found on our Allergy Safety page.

Reasonable Adjustments

We will consider reasonable adjustments where a medical condition, disability or health need affects a child’s access to school life.

Depending on the child’s needs, this may include:

  • adjustments to routines or activities;
  • access to rest, movement or sensory breaks;
  • adaptations to the environment;
  • additional supervision or support;
  • temporary restrictions following illness or injury; or
  • other appropriate arrangements to support safe participation.

Our aim is to enable children to participate as fully as possible in school life.

Medicines in School

Where a child requires medication during the school day, parents and carers should contact the school so that appropriate arrangements can be agreed.

Medication must be supplied, stored and administered in accordance with the school’s procedures.

Working with Families

Parents and carers should let us know as soon as possible if their child:

  • is diagnosed with a new medical condition;
  • starts, stops or changes medication;
  • requires additional care or support during the school day;
  • experiences a significant change in their health needs; or
  • requires temporary adjustments following illness, injury or a medical procedure.

Good communication between home and school helps us make sure that the right support is in place at the right time.
