Our Learning Framework
My Knowledge. My Skills. My Innovation. My Progress.
At New Moston Primary School, our Learning Framework explains how children develop as learners.
It sits alongside our wider Curriculum Framework and helps ensure that every child builds secure knowledge, develops important skills, thinks creatively and understands the progress they are making.
The framework gives pupils and staff a shared language for learning and helps children become increasingly confident, independent and reflective.
What is the Learning Framework?
Our Learning Framework describes the key elements we want every child to experience through their learning.
It helps pupils understand that learning is not simply about completing tasks. It is about building knowledge, applying skills, exploring ideas and recognising how understanding develops over time.
The framework is used across subjects and year groups so that children encounter a consistent approach as they progress through school.

My Knowledge
“I know more and remember more.”
Learning starts with secure knowledge.
We help children build a strong understanding of key concepts, vocabulary and ideas so that new learning can connect to what they already know.
This includes:
- learning and using important vocabulary;
- connecting new knowledge to prior learning;
- remembering and recalling important information;
- explaining ideas with increasing confidence; and
- building strong foundations for future learning.
My Skills
“I can do more and apply what I know.”
Children learn how to use and apply their knowledge effectively.
Skills are taught, practised and refined over time so that pupils become increasingly confident and independent.
This includes:
- practising and developing key subject skills;
- applying learning in different contexts;
- solving problems and reasoning;
- communicating and collaborating effectively; and
- developing greater independence.
My Innovation
“I think creatively and explore new ideas.”
We encourage children to be curious, imaginative and willing to explore different possibilities.
Innovation is about using knowledge and skills to think, create, solve problems and consider new approaches.
This includes:
- asking questions and exploring ideas;
- considering different solutions;
- expressing ideas in different ways;
- showing resilience when something is challenging; and
- learning from mistakes and adapting approaches.
My Progress
“I understand how I am improving and what I need to do next.”
We want children to understand their own development as learners.
Pupils are supported to recognise what they have learned, respond to feedback and identify how they can continue to improve.
This includes:
- reflecting on learning;
- responding to feedback;
- recognising improvement in knowledge and skills;
- understanding appropriate next steps; and
- taking pride in progress and achievement.
How Does It Link to Our Curriculum?
Our Curriculum Framework determines the experiences and learning opportunities children receive, while our Learning Framework helps define what successful learning looks like within those experiences.
Together, they ensure that pupils do more than encounter content.
We want children to learn it, remember it, apply it and build upon it.
The Learning Framework is particularly important within our commitment to curriculum Entitlement, ensuring that every child has access to the knowledge, skills and opportunities required to succeed.
Developing Confident Learners
As children move through New Moston, we want them to become increasingly able to talk about their learning, recognise their strengths and understand how they can improve.
Through My Knowledge, My Skills, My Innovation and My Progress, we aim to develop children who are knowledgeable, capable, curious and proud of what they achieve.
