Teaching Framework
Consistent Standards, Responsive Teaching, Active Engagement, Impactful Design
Introduction Here.
This framework sits within our wider Curriculum Strategy and is shaped by our school values of Growth, Standards, Attitude, and Pride.
What Is the Teaching Framework?
The Teaching Framework defines what effective teaching looks like at New Moston. It provides clarity and ambition for all staff and acts as a tool for improvement, reflection, and professional development. It supports leaders and teachers to focus on what makes the most difference to children’s learning.
Why do we have a Teaching Framework?
We believe great teaching is the most significant factor in a child’s learning journey. A consistent, school-wide approach helps us ensure that all children, regardless of need or background, experience excellent teaching that enables them to achieve and grow.
How is the Teaching Framework Used?
It is used as a benchmark for professional dialogue, support, and improvement. It underpins monitoring and evaluation and informs coaching, CPD, and strategic decision-making. Most importantly, it supports teachers to meet the needs of their learners.
The Teaching Framework is built around four pillars:
Consistent Standards
“Every child experiences high expectations.”
We establish consistent expectations across classrooms so that all children know what great learning looks and feels like. This includes:
-
Clear routines and structured starts to every lesson
-
High-quality modelling and use of worked examples
-
Consistency in behaviour expectations and learning habits
-
Visual supports and accessible resources used purposefully
-
Professional behaviours from all adults, every day
Responsive Teaching
“Every child’s learning needs are understood and addressed.”
Teaching is adaptive and based on ongoing assessment. We make informed choices that support every child to succeed. This includes:
-
Live feedback and in-lesson adjustment
-
Questioning that probes, checks, and deepens understanding
-
Scaffolds and support tools that promote independence
-
Responsive planning informed by prior learning
-
Flexibility in teaching without losing rigour or pace
Active Engagement
“Every child is a participant in their learning.”
Children are actively involved in their learning and know what they are learning, why it matters, and how to succeed. This includes:
-
Engaging tasks that promote thinking, discussion, and curiosity
-
Opportunities for collaborative and independent learning
-
Metacognitive strategies that build self-awareness
-
High participation through cold calling, talk partners and other strategies
-
Celebrating effort, progress, and contribution
Impactful Design
“Every child’s learning journey is planned with purpose.”
Planning is purposeful, sequential, and aligned to curriculum intent. It reflects ambition and ensures learning builds over time. This includes:
-
Clear learning objectives and success criteria
-
Well-sequenced lessons with coherent progression
-
Use of retrieval and deliberate practice
-
Planning that anticipates misconceptions and plans for them
-
Assessment information used to refine and redesign learning

-
Sets consistent standards across all classrooms
-
Responds to the needs of every learner
