Learning Framework

My Knowledge, My Skills, My Innovation, My Progress

At New Moston Primary School, our Learning Framework sits at the heart of our Curriculum Strategy. While the Curriculum Framework sets the direction for what children experience — through Engagement, Entitlement, Enrichment, and Enhancement — the Learning Framework explains how learning is structured and developed for every child.

It ensures that all children receive their full entitlement to a high-quality education and are supported to make meaningful, sustained progress across all subjects.

What Is the Learning Framework?

The Learning Framework explains how children experience, understand, and take ownership of their learning at New Moston. It provides a common language for pupils and staff, and it is embedded across all lessons, subjects, and stages of learning.

It gives every child the opportunity to build strong foundations, develop meaningful skills, think creatively, and recognise the progress they make.

Why do we have a Learning Framework?

We believe that learning is personal. Every child deserves a curriculum that challenges them, supports them, and helps them grow.

This framework ensures consistency in what children learn and how teachers support that learning — enabling us to create ambitious, inclusive, and joyful classrooms.

How is the Teaching Framework Used?

Our Learning Framework is used in classrooms to shape lessons and guide how children talk about their learning. It helps pupils reflect on what they know, how they learn, and what they need to do next.

It also supports teachers to plan purposefully, ensuring that every child can succeed across each pillar of learning.

How does it link to our Curriculum Framework?

The pillar of Entitlement is where our Learning Framework is most visible. It guarantees that all children are given access to the essential building blocks of learning: knowledge, skills, innovation, and progress.

Every unit of work, every subject, and every lesson is planned with this in mind — ensuring that children don’t just encounter content, but truly learn, develop, apply, and grow.

The Learning Framework is built around four pillars:

My Knowledge

“I know more and remember more.”

Learning starts with knowledge. We help children build a rich, secure understanding of key concepts across all subjects. This includes:

  • Learning and using important vocabulary

  • Connecting new ideas to what they already know

  • Using strategies to remember and recall facts

  • Talking confidently about what they’ve learned

  • Building a strong foundation for future learning

My Skills

“I can do more and apply what I know.”

Children learn how to use their knowledge in practical, meaningful ways. This includes:

  • Practising and refining key skills over time

  • Applying skills in different subjects and contexts

  • Working independently and with others

  • Developing problem-solving, reasoning, and communication

  • Knowing how to improve and aim higher

My Innovation

“I think creatively and explore new ideas.”

Children are encouraged to ask questions, take risks, and think in different ways. This includes:

  • Being curious and showing imagination

  • Exploring different solutions to challenges

  • Expressing ideas through writing, art, discussion, or design

  • Showing resilience when things don’t work the first time

  • Seeing mistakes as part of learning

My Progress

“I understand how I’m improving and what to do next.”

Progress is personal. Children are supported to see how far they’ve come and what their next steps are. This includes:

  • Reflecting on their own learning journey

  • Using feedback to make improvements

  • Setting personal goals and celebrating growth

  • Recognising progress in knowledge, skills, and confidence

  • Being proud of how much they’ve learned
